Public Statement from the Arizona Psychological Association (AzPA)

Date: March 27, 2025

The Arizona Psychological Association (AzPA) acknowledges the profound challenges currently facing healthcare facilities and services due to evolving federal policies. These changes have led to the difficult decision by some administrators to discontinue care for our most vulnerable patient populations and communities, specifically members and families in the LGBTQ+ community. We recognize the immense pressure that healthcare leaders are under, often driven by the threat of financial divestment, which can force them to make choices that compromise the well-being of those they serve.

Furthermore, we empathize with the healthcare professionals who are navigating this complex landscape. Many of our colleagues are experiencing significant moral distress and injury as they strive to provide the best possible care in an increasingly challenging environment. This emotional and ethical burden is deeply felt across our community, and it is imperative that we support one another during these times.

At AzPA, we remain steadfast in our commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA). In the face of federal policies, and potential state policies, that may undermine these principles, we reaffirm our dedication to promoting an equitable healthcare system that prioritizes the needs of all individuals. For more information on our DEIA values, please view our Diversity Statement.

In light of the current situation, AzPA is taking the following actions to support healthcare professionals, vulnerable communities, and the integrity of mental health services:

  1. Advocacy Efforts: We will actively engage with policymakers to advocate for equitable healthcare access and to challenge state and federal policies that adversely affect vulnerable populations.
  1. Resource Development: AzPA will develop and disseminate resources for mental health professionals to navigate the complexities of these changes, including guidelines for ethical decision-making in challenging circumstances.
  1. Support Networks: We will establish support networks for healthcare professionals experiencing moral distress, providing forums for discussion, peer support, and professional counseling options.
  1. Training and Education: AzPA will offer workshops and training sessions focused on DEIA principles, ensuring that all members are equipped to advocate for their patients and communities effectively.
  1. Community Outreach: We will strengthen partnerships with community organizations to ensure that those most affected by these policy changes receive the necessary support and advocacy.

The Arizona Psychological Association stands firm in its commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable healthcare environment for all. Together, we can work to address these pressing challenges and ensure that mental health services remain accessible to those who need them most.
