Description

Program Description: This program is for clinicians who want to increase their competence to assess and treat comorbid sleep disruptions in their clients with various mental health difficulties. Evidence indicates that chronic difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep despite adequate sleep opportunity (i.e., insomnia disorder) and recurring nightmares (nightmare disorder) are common across many mental health disorders. Unfortunately, there is currently a lack of clinicians with competence to address these challenges through the assessment and treatment of chronic sleep disruptions in their clients. This program will emphasize the learning and practice of the first-line treatments for chronic insomnia: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I; Edignger et al. 2021) and nightmare disorder: Imagery Rehearsal Therapy (IRT) and Exposure, Relaxation, and Rescripting Therapy (ERRT) (Morgenthaler et al. 2018). Participation in this program will enable clinicians to gain a deeper appreciation for sleep disturbance as a transdiagnostic factor across mental health difficulties (Harvey et al. 2011). Program Level: Intermediate Learning Objectives: 1. Describe two functions of sleep, the circadian and homeostatic processes regulating sleep, and how this knowledge informs clinical assessment and treatment. 2. Describe at least two diagnostic criteria and implement standard assessment measures for clinically relevant sleep-wake disorders including insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, and nightmare disorder. 3. List two consequences of sleep disruptions in clients with various mental health disorders including anxiety disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder, and borderline personality disorder.
